is the capital of the region Jiloca Valley which includes
the towns of Monreal del Campo, Báguena, Burbáguena,
Luco, Caminreal and others.
In the province of Teruel, Calamocha is one of the regions
with higher density, with a large number of villages
close togheter, such as Luco, Báguena and Burbáguena.
The economy is based on agriculture, which is quite
prosperous, and livestock, due to industrial slaughterhouses.
Its climate is cold with low temperatures in winter,
due to its altitude (900 meters above sea level). Its
location is privileged, in the center of the triangle
formed by the roads of Zaragoza – Valencia and
Calatyud – Teruel. Because of that, Calamocha
has been used to establish ham industries.
Gallocanta lake is in the surroundings of Calamocha
(the distance between them is 15 km). The origin of
Calamocha is “Calat” (castle), but currently,
it does not maintain any XIV century fortress, as the
poem of the Cid relates.
Clamocha received royal visits, including that of James
I the Conqueror. It worths going for a walk in their
typical tortuous streets. The church of the Assumption
was built in the eighteenth century. In addition there
are several aragonese buildings with balconies and beautiful
arched galleries. A single example is “Casa Tejada”,
from the 17th century. Moreover, Calamocha preserves
a roman bridge over the Jiloca.
